NPO annual report guide
NPO annual report submission
Every registered nonprofit organisation in South Africa has to send the Department of Social Development (DSD) an annual report each year. It keeps your registration in good standing, and funders often ask for proof that you're compliant. Here's what you need to know.
The 9-month rule
Your annual report is due within 9 months of your financial year-end. If your year ends on 28 February, your report is due by 30 November. If it ends on 31 March, it's due by 31 December. Your financial statements need to be ready well before that, because your accounting officer still has to review them and write a report.
What to submit
- A narrative report: what your organisation did during the year, who you helped and how many people.
- Annual financial statements, together with your accounting officer's report on them.
- Any changes to your office-bearers, constitution or address since your last report.
These requirements come from the Nonprofit Organisations Act. If you're behind, each missing year is filed separately, oldest first.
DSD's new online NPO system
On 15 October 2026, DSD switched off its old (legacy) NPO system. Annual reports, registrations and updates now go through the new online system only, and paper is no longer accepted. Each NPO needs its own profile on the new system to reach its records (DSD News).
This matters because DSD does act on late reports: in February 2025 it deregistered more than 6,000 non-compliant NPOs in one round (gov.za). Getting your profile set up and your reports filed now is the easiest way to stay off that list.

NPO deregistered? What to do
When reports are late, DSD sends a compliance notice. If the NPO still doesn't comply, its registration can be cancelled. If that's happened to you, don't panic, and don't keep telling funders you're registered.
- Find out exactly what happened. Get the letter or notice, the date, and which years' reports were missing.
- Catch up on the paperwork. Prepare every outstanding annual report, with signed financial statements.
- Ask DSD which route applies. That may be reinstatement or a new registration on the online system. DSD makes the decision.
I can help with steps 1 to 3 and the online submission. Nobody can promise you an outcome from DSD, but having your paperwork complete is the place to start.

Questions
NPO compliance FAQs
Are you from DSD?
No. I'm an independent service and not affiliated with the Department of Social Development. I help you prepare and submit your reports through DSD's official online system.
Do you sign financial statements?
No. Your financial statements must be signed off by an accounting officer. I don't do that part, but I can connect you with a bookkeeper who can.
What does it cost?
WhatsApp me for a quote after your free check. Every organisation is different, so I'll look at where you stand first.
When is an NPO annual report due?
Nine months after your financial year-end. For example, if your year ends on 28 February, your annual report is due by 30 November. Use the deadline checker on this page, and check your exact date with DSD.
Can I still hand in my NPO report on paper?
No. DSD switched off its old NPO system on 15 October 2026, and annual reports now go through the new online system only. I can help you get set up on it.
We've been deregistered. Can you still help?
Start with the free check. I'll look at your status and talk you through the options. I can't promise any outcome from DSD, but I'll help you get your paperwork in order.
Don't wait for the deadline rush.
